Union Minister Nitin Gadkari To recommend that airlines substitute sugar with honey. Which safe is the swap?

Planning to reduce sugar this year?

Planning to reduce sugar in 2020? We’ve got some news for you! In a refreshing move, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari spoke of a recent decision asking major private and public airlines in the country to consider adding honey as an alternative to sugar for passengers on board their flights.

Happy with that advice, huh?

Speaking at an event, the minister said that people will soon enough have the option to choose healthier variants with their meals. Talking about the move, he said: “Normally, one spoon of honey is equal to three spoons of sugar. Currently, refined sugar sachets are provided on board to passengers, so we are trying if we can provide honey sachets or honey cubes in flights and hotels,” In the past too, the government issued directives to serve low-fat, low-carb meals to crew onboard and give passengers the option to have nutrition-rich food like besan chilla, oats, egg whites and paneer that are low cholesterol foods.

Here’s the reason why

We all know that sugar is a major contributor to our diet, and our addiction is a major health concern. It’s never a bad idea to reduce your sugar addictions from diabetes, obesity and a host of other side effects.

What’s a better alternative for the honey?

Sugar and honey are both sweeteners-their natural structure is the only thing that makes honey healthier. While sugar is made up of glucose and fructose (50-50 ratio), honey is also made up of sugar but contains only 30% glucose and a little less than 40% fructose. It also contains several other types of sugar molecules that take longer for the body to digest and are not always stored as fat. This means that this is relatively healthier. There are also zero preservatives and additives in pure organic honey, which is another risk factor when you eat processed sugar. In addition, honey also has a lot of health benefits-from serving as a natural immunity booster, supplying nutrients and minerals, including amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants.

But is this the best option?

Also, as sweet and calorie-laden as sugar, honey is just a little healthier. You can run the risk of overdoing it, as with anything sweet. Honey can be safely swapped with sugar in your daily diet as long as you use it in moderation. Remember, it’s not the safest alternative in the end!

There are better options available?

Do not go crazy with natural sweeteners and extracts if you plan to cut sugar. Nevertheless, jaggery or seed, date and coconut sugar, stevia or molasses are some of the best options.
