NMC turns 5 hospitals, bungalow into Covid-19 centres

Nagpur:- The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is all set to treat productive patients, after achieving fair progress in producing Covid-19. Five shambles hospitals and health centers are being converted into Dedicated COVID Health Centers (DCHC) with a capacity of 450-465 beds, including 50 in the ICU.

The Surana Maternity Home in Sadar, which was used for more than a decade as the official bungalow, is set to be used again for patients. Going through central government communication, the state government had projected 11,114 cases in the city between May 15-31 and directed the administration to be ready with as many beds as possible.

The administration will also plan COVID Care Centers (CCC) for asymptomatic positive corona patients, DCHCs for moderately serious patients, and a Dedicated COVID Hospital (DCH) for severe patients. Municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, chief medical officer Dr. Yogendra Savai, and additional chief medical officer Dr. Praveen Gantawar decided to establish NMC’s own DCHCs to reduce pressure on state-run hospitals and rely entirely on private ones.

Surana Maternity Home had become vacant after the retirement of the additional Municipal Commissioner. Work is nearing completion to develop it as a 35-bed DCHC. The Unani Hospital and Physiotherapy Center of the NMC is located in the adjacent building and serving the same purpose. Another important task assumed by the NMC is to transform a health center at KT Nagar into a 130-bedded DCHC. The ICU facility is being built here too. Residents have turned against the move.

The three hospitals in NMC Indira Gandhi Rugnalaya (IGR) at LAD Square, Panchpaoli Maternity Home and Rambagh Isolation Hospital were in shambles. Work is nearing completion to convert IGR into a 130 bedded-DCHC including ICU. The hospital is set to look a little new.

Similarly, the Panchpaoli Maternity Home is set to be a 110-bedded DCHC and will probably be ready soon. In a short time, the Isolation Hospital will be converted to a 60-bedded DCHC. The ICU facility is being developed in this area too.

In case of a sudden increase in cases, the five hospitals, situated in various parts of town, will come handy.”The Urban primary health centers run by the civic body are in good condition. Recently they were developed under the scheme of the central government. The hospitals were in poor condition and lacked adequate facilities.
