Spearheaded by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), this ambitious initiative sets its sights on transforming Deekshabhoomi into a premier tourism destination, labeled as a category “A” attraction. With a deadline of October 2025 looming, the city is abuzz with excitement over the impending metamorphosis.
Chief Minister’s Vision: A Catalyst for Change
Last October, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde infused vitality into the project by allocating the much-needed funds. His foresight paved the way for numerous development and beautification endeavors, including the creation of a cutting-edge museum, an open-air theater, and upgraded parking facilities. These additions promise to enhance the visitor experience and solidify Deekshabhoomi’s status as a cultural landmark.
Navigating the Transformation: From Vision to Reality
Under the watchful eye of NIT Chairman Sanjay Meena, excavation work is underway to lay the foundation for a modern basement parking lot. This pivotal phase marks a significant step towards the realization of the project’s objectives. It symbolizes the convergence of past aspirations with present-day dedication, propelling Deekshabhoomi towards a brighter future.
A Legacy of Progress: Honoring Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

The recent awarding of the project’s tender signifies a commitment to timely delivery, reflecting a shared dedication towards excellence. Despite initial cost estimations of ₹100 crore in 2018, subsequent revisions have seen the project’s value rise to ₹200.31 crore, underscoring its significance in the region’s development landscape.
Embracing Heritage: A Beacon of Cultural Reverence
Deekshabhoomi’s allure extends beyond its monetary value, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike to pay homage to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. As the site of his historic embrace of Buddhism on October 14, 1956, it stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. Phase-I of the project unfolds across the 22.7 acres entrusted to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti, while Phase-II awaits the acquisition of additional land crucial for its completion.
Charting the Course Ahead: Towards a Vibrant Tomorrow
The road to Deekshabhoomi’s transformation is not without its challenges, notably the acquisition of 3.84 acres of land for Phase-II from the Central Cotton Research Institute (CICR).
