Transport Ministry Approves India’s First Flash-Charging Electric Bus System in Nagpur
The Ministry of Road Transport has given the green light to fund India’s first-ever flash-charging electric bus system in Nagpur. This groundbreaking initiative will revolutionize public transport in the city, ensuring fast, reliable, and eco-friendly last-mile connectivity, particularly along the Ring Road and peri-urban areas.
As part of the project, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation will roll out more than 30 articulated electric buses, each 18 meters long and capable of accommodating 130 passengers. These buses will operate on a non-stop route with a frequency of every 15 minutes, running for 16 hours daily and serving over 8,000 passengers.
A major highlight is the use of flash-charging technology. With over six 600 kW overhead flash chargers installed at select bus stops, these buses will recharge in just 15 seconds. This minimizes downtime, eliminating the need for long charging intervals at depots, making it a more efficient solution compared to traditional charging methods.
The buses are designed to provide global-standard comfort and aesthetics, including features like CCTV systems, overhead storage similar to airplanes, pantries, vending machines, seats with laptop tray tables, and charging points. This system aims to not only reduce environmental impact but also bring down operational costs, making it a win-win for both commuters and the city.
The ministry’s approval comes just before the model code of conduct (MCC) for upcoming elections is set to take effect. This initiative will also facilitate seamless travel between Metro stations and other parts of the city, enhancing overall urban mobility.
By combining advanced technology with sustainable public transport solutions, Nagpur is poised to set a new benchmark for urban mobility in India.
