Crop loans for waiving up to 2 lakh: Uddhav

Maharashtra’s chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray, announced on Saturday that crop loans will be waived to a maximum of 2 lakh until September 30, 2019. The Common Minimum Program (CMP), announced last month by the government of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), listed farm loan waivers as one of its agenda’s main points. The decision of Saturday is seen as the first step towards the fulfilment of the CMP promises.

The chief minister said the waiver of the loan would be a straightforward scheme and the money would be transferred directly to farmers ‘ accounts.

“The farmer is not going to suffer from any restrictions and the government is planning to free loan as many farmers as possible,” he said. Mr Thackeray said that the new loan will also be restructured, which will be pending next June.

“Those who pay the crop loan regularly without fail will receive the benefits of a new scheme to be announced in the next 15 days,” he added.

Mr Patil later told the sources that it would soon be announced the actual number of beneficiaries and the total amount of the loan.

“But the sum would surpass more than 20,000 crore that the previous government claims to have disbursed. There will be no forms, no spouse interview, no online system as the previous government has done. We are going to do it in a transparent way. The scheme’s specifics will be announced soon, “he said. The Opposition BJP alleged that the government of the state had assured full waiver of loans and had backstabbed the farmers by not doing so. Opposition Leader Devendra Fadnavis staged a walk-out in protest while Mr. Thackeray was congratulated by the treasury benches MLAs.
