Empty road, transport closed as Nagpur supports ‘Janata Curfew’ with overwhelming majority

Nagpur: An unprecedented shutdown started across Nagpur on Sunday morning following an appeal from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a’ Janata curfew’ to help monitor the spread of Wuhan Coronavirus.

The City’s people overwhelmingly supported the idea of self-imposed curfew by the Prime Minister which was evident throughout the country from the empty streets.

The ‘Janata curfew’ began on Sunday at 7 am and people have largely kept themselves indoors as part of the social distancing exercise to stop the virus from spreading. The’ Janata Curfew’ is set to end at 9 pm.

In his national address, PM Modi had advised people to remain indoors from 7 am to 9 pm., a move he said would be a critical test for a country to determine its pandemic-fighting capabilities.

Nagpur roads were seen empty on Sunday, public transport and markets closed across town as Nagpurians decided to put themselves under a 14-hour volunteer curfew today to restrict the country’s rapidly spreading coronavirus epidemic.

City streets bore a barren look and on Sunday public places were left abandoned as the “Janata curfew” kicked in.
