No water shortage in city as full of Pench dam

Nagpur:- Pench River dams of Totladoh and Kamptee Khairi, the main source of water supply for the city, have filled up to brim leading to the opening of their gates. In Pench, it also means that there will be no shortage of raw drinking water for the town and there will be enough water available for irrigation in Nagpur and Bhandara districts. There will also be enough water available for Koradi and Khaparkheda thermal power stations.

Jayant Gavli, Water Resources Department (WRD) Superintendent Engineer, “On Sunday 10 of the 14 Totladoh Reservoir gates and 12 of the 16 Kamptee Khairi gates were opened. The dams have been filled with rains received in their own catchment up to 95%.

4 Totladoh gates were opened on Saturday. We were informed that the government of Madhya Pradesh (MP) had opened Chaurai dam gates upstream of Totladoh. Therefore, on Sunday, we opened more gates. “Gavli added that there would be enough raw drinking water for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), irrigation, and other consumers for a year, especially next summer. “Yet there are more than 45 days left of monsoon which means more rains,” he said.

Totladoh reservoir ‘s live storage capacity is 1.017 million cubic meters (MMC) and the Kamptee Khairi reservoir ‘s capacity is 142 MMC for a total of 1.159 MMC.
