Buzzing Korean, Spanish and French languages in the city
Nagpur: Apart from the popularity of Spanish and French, the love and enthusiasm for learning foreign languages are generating buzz in the region. People follow the trend of’ K-POP culture and participate in workshops on the Korean language conducted by young tutors in the area. Such workshops are conducted under the banner of’ Culture Fluent,’ a workshop station in the foreign language, founded by a young girl, Devyani Jaiswal.
After Std 10 Devyani began learning French. There were no schools which offered French or any other foreign language at that time. “I’ve been lucky to find a wonderful mentor who has turned my hobby into a passion. Today I hold a DELF B2 (Diplôme d’études en langue française) upper-intermediate certificate in French language studies, “she stated.
Rebecca Peter, a self-educated Korean language teacher, studied from the Internet the alphabet, vocabulary and grammar. She was intrigued by the Korean culture that came from the popularity of the Gangnam Style dance video, the BTS Army, a popular Korean band, etc. “Korean culture is peculiar and the most common explanation for many young people to learn the language is motivated by their culture’s authenticity,” she said.
Devyani has organized numerous workshops on language appreciation, which was a first for the region. “We explore culture and traditions and language-focused events in all our workshops so that people get an idea of what to expect when they start formally studying,” she said.
Many 16-23-year-old students take up languages as a way to broaden their horizons and improve their skills. Thus, young tutors offer a sense of comfort and bonhomie, the channels are opened for conversation. Customers choose these young tutors because the teacher and student have a free conversation and the learning gets enriched.
Gowrie Maiya, a medicine student shared her understanding of Korean culture through the language medium: “In these workshops, we were not only taught about the language, but also addressed various subjects such as history, grammar, fashion, and trends, which made it a fun learning experience for everyone.” That’s why I started attending language workshops. “Roshni John, an IT firm employee who is a big’ K-Pop’ fan, said,” I had a great sense of fascination with Korean culture and opted to learn Rebecca language. I attended the workshops and it makes all the difference to learn with someone from your age, “she said.
