Examination uncertainty worries students at NU

Nagpur:- Students are becoming restless as Nagpur University (NU) awaits state government guidelines for conducting summer exams, which are indefinitely postponed during the current lockdown. Some worry about the delay, while others worry about the risk of catching coronavirus once submissions and examinations start.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already issued recommendations for the phased conduct of exams. “We are not sure if an internal investigation will take place now. If they do take place, all students will be exposed, as they will have to enter college to apply their assignments. Otherwise, students would have to disperse over 15 days which looks difficult, “some students told.

The students are also concerned for the safety of their teachers. “All students should be introduced to these. Every college lacks the comfort of wide spaces. How will they maintain social distance during internal exams, as there would also be students from other courses, “they asked. Students are also of the opinion that the NU must perform only final-semester tests and provide average marks for all other semesters.

“This indefinite postponement causes serious anxiety and mental anguish for the students and thus affects their ability. UGC has already set its guidelines but NU has not told the students about the same. It is high time that the university announced its decision. Then we can plan accordingly, “said one man.

Student parents living in hostels are apprehensive about sending their kids to the area. “COVID cases weren’t going down. The hostelites are afraid of not having proper transportation, food, and lodging. There’s still no public transit services, “another student said.

A student in management said their morale was down due to the lockout, and they couldn’t concentrate on studies. “We are not positive what will happen in a month’s time. Will we be studying for internships or written exams? This problem continues to hound us,’ he said.

NU officials said the academic calendar will possibly be set in a few days’ time. “We are considering keeping an objective of 30%, a concise question paper of 70%. The prospect of conducting exams online is also being given consideration. The university awaits guidance from the government which will be based on guidelines from UGC. Students don’t have to worry, they said.
