Futala Fountain Project Cost Crosses ₹75 Crore; Contractors Likely to Face Huge Losses

The grand musical fountain and light show project at Futala Lake, envisioned to elevate Nagpur’s beauty to global standards, is now facing a massive cost escalation. Originally budgeted at ₹50 crore, the total project cost has now surged to nearly ₹75 crore — a ₹25 crore jump attributed to prolonged delays, heavy rainfall, and damage caused over the past year.
Launched in September 2023, the project has been stalled for several months due to legal disputes, technical glitches, and financial hurdles. Sources estimate losses of around ₹11 crore have already been incurred. Officials from Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) have confirmed that technical and financial complications are the primary reasons behind the standstill.
The executing company Studio One and NMRCL are preparing for a detailed review meeting to resolve pending issues. Prolonged inactivity and monsoon damage have severely affected wiring, cables, and infrastructure, further increasing the cost of restarting work.
NMRCL Chairman Sanjay Meena stated, “A technical and financial review meeting will be conducted soon to ensure the project gets back on track. Work will resume at the earliest.”
Meanwhile, citizens continue to question when the much-awaited world-class musical fountain at Futala will finally become a reality.
