Maharashtra: RLDA Progresses On Nagpur Railway Station Redevelopment, Set For Completion By December 2025

The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is making significant strides in the redevelopment of the Nagpur Railway Station in Maharashtra. This ambitious project is on track to be completed by December 2025, promising a state-of-the-art facility for passengers. Here’s a comprehensive look at the redevelopment progress and key features of the new Nagpur Railway Station.

Redeveloping a major railway station like Nagpur is no small feat. The RLDA, under the Ministry of Railways, has been diligently working on this project to ensure it meets modern standards and can handle the increasing passenger traffic. This article explores the detailed progress and expected features of the revamped Nagpur Railway Station.

Key Features of the Redeveloped Station

Passenger Capacity

One of the most notable aspects of the redeveloped station is its capacity. The new Nagpur Railway Station is designed to accommodate up to 98,000 passengers per day. This upgrade is crucial to meet the growing demand and provide a comfortable experience for travelers.

Segregated Areas

To enhance passenger flow and safety, the station will feature dedicated segregation for arrival and departure passengers. Separate Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) will facilitate this segregation. Additionally, a 108-meter-wide concourse with a roof plaza will house all passenger amenities and retail options, making the station a convenient hub for travelers.

Arrival and Departure Plazas

The station’s design includes distinct areas for arrivals and departures:

  • West Side: The west side will feature a Departure and Arrival Plaza (G+2) with a 3,420 sqm basement parking area. This area will have clearly defined lanes for taxis, cars, and autos, ensuring smooth drop-off and pick-up.
  • East Side: The east side will boast an Arrival Building (G+5) and a Departure Building (G+2) with a unified basement of approximately 13,250 sqm. This design will facilitate smooth traffic flow with both basement and surface parking.

Construction Progress

East Side Developments

The construction on the east side is progressing steadily. The Arrival Building (G+5) has reached the third floor, while the Departure Building (G+2) is currently under construction. A new booking counter is ready for relocation, but to avoid passenger inconvenience, it will be shifted only after a staircase connection to the South FOB on Platform 8 is established.

West Side Developments

On the west side, the Railway Administration Building WW4 (G+7) is under construction. Its foundation work is complete, and the building will be a steel composite structure for faster execution and longer life. The steel structure is being fabricated in an RDSO-approved workshop, and work will be expedited using this fabricated material.

Previously used for car parking and office stores, this area has been cleared, with old structures dismantled and parking facilities relocated. To minimize passenger disruption, basement construction is being executed in phases. So far, 50% of the basement has been completed, with the remaining area scheduled for work starting at the end of August 2024.

Platform and Concourse Work

Work on the platforms for the FOBs and concourse will commence soon, as the steel work is currently being fabricated in the workshop. This phase is crucial for ensuring smooth passenger movement across the station.

Modern Amenities and Infrastructure

Roof Plaza

The roof plaza is a standout feature, providing a vast space for passenger amenities and retail options. This area will serve as a central hub for travelers, offering everything from dining to shopping, making the waiting time more enjoyable.

Parking Facilities

Both the east and west sides of the station will have extensive parking facilities. The west side will have a 3,420 sqm basement parking area, while the east side will feature a unified basement of approximately 13,250 sqm. These parking areas will cater to the needs of both passengers and visitors, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Traffic Management

The new design ensures smooth traffic flow around the station. Clearly defined lanes for taxis, cars, and autos will prevent congestion, and the phased approach to construction will minimize disruption to passenger movement.

Sustainability Initiatives

Green Building Practices

The redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station incorporates green building practices. Energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting, and waste management systems are part of the plan to make the station environmentally friendly.

Sustainable Materials

Using sustainable materials in construction is a priority. The steel composite structure of the Railway Administration Building ensures longevity and reduces environmental impact.

The redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station by the RLDA is a monumental project set to redefine passenger experience in Maharashtra. With its modern design, extensive amenities, and sustainable practices, the new station is poised to become a model for railway infrastructure in India.
