Slow net speed, new teaching method to put students off
Nagpur:- While there has been a sudden rush by coaching institutes, schools, and colleges for online classes, many say the experience is being spoiled because of poor network connectivity and teachers faced with ‘poker.’ Some teachers themselves have accepted that few of their colleagues get nervous in front of the camera and can’t replicate the feeling of the real classroom.
Speaking to another teacher who was aware of the situation. He has said that many are not used to the new teaching method. “All good teachers thrive upon the student’s physical presence. We assess their body language, their mood, and change the tempo of our speech accordingly.
We can sometimes figure out which student does not follow along and we focus on that student by looking at him or her while talking, “said the teacher, who owns a coaching institute. There is a lack of all these elements in the e-learning platform, particularly where videos are recorded and sent to WhatsApp groups.
A father, who owns a franchise for branded clothes, told that the online classes of his son are a waste of time. “Their college has started these classes and in the scheduled time, he logs in. But the net connection goes off several times, or the audio is crackling. Often, I’m told students listen to songs on their headphones and log in just to mark their presence, “said the parent.
The online classes are currently more for schools and colleges to keep students busy and to try to finish off some small portion of the curriculum. But this time is critical for coaching institutes.
“Competitive exams like JEE and NEET will take place after the lockdown is over and the students have more time to study every day. But students are used to personal one-to-one attention that can’t be replicated by many teachers, “said a class owner who didn’t want to be identified because his teachers felt demoralized.
“Responding to WhatsApp queries is very cumbersome and our senior teachers are not used to that. I ‘m sure we ‘re all going to get used to it in the future but that’s not possible in such a short time, “the class owner said.
